What is ITAR?
The International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) is a U.S. regulation that controls the manufacturing, brokering, and import and export of defense related articles and services as defined in the United States Munitions List (USML). These articles and services cover physical defense articles, such as firearms and ammunition, as well as defense-related “technical data”, such as plans, documents, or diagrams used to manufacture military gear. Any company that wishes to broker or distribute defense-related items on the USML must be ITAR compliant. The process involves two main steps: registration and compliance.
Registration
The registration process is completed through the State Department’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) in order to be in ITAR activity – company registration is a base requirement for the next step, compliance.
Compliance
Companies engaged in the manufacturing, exporting, importing, or brokering of defense articles must be ITAR compliant.
